What to expect ?

 

Day of the limb lengthening Surgery: Arrive at the hospital, complete all pre-op formalities and paperwork. Visit your room and prepare for the surgery.

The procedure starts by giving certain pre-op injectable in order to prepare for the OT. The surgery then begins and usually done on epidural and is completed within 3-4 hours. The patient is then transferred to ICU and kept under observation for about an hour, if everything is stable, he is moved to his room. Hospital stay typically lasts for 4-5 days, during this time pain management is done through several IV drips.

 

After you are discharged from the hospital, you will be moved to your hotel suite. In your room you are provided with basic items like a rolling chair, walker, table top, etc. You will be appointed a dedicated helper to assist you in daily tasks, in addition hotel staff is also available for service. Your stay includes a three course meal (B/L/D). During your stay, your condition will be closely monitored and regularly reported to the medical staff. In case you require, medical service is available round the clock. Typically, pain is bearable for most patients but if you require, pain management is done through oral medication.

 

Following 2-3 days of rest, you will be taught the lengthening mechanism. Initially the distraction rate is kept at 1mm per day till 2-3 cms then depending up on the regenerate distraction rate is adjusted to 0.75mm, if the healing is slow the patient is advised to either reduce the distraction rate to 0.25-0.50 mm or take a few days of break from the lengthening. To keep a check on distraction (height gain) X-ray is done once in every two weeks. 

 

PT will be provided twice a day. PT will progress gradually from light exercise (like stretching) to heavy exercise (like standing and walking in the frames), adjusted to the patient's tolerance level. PT will also include frame management including cleaning of pin sites, tightening of frame, etc.

 

After the patient completes his target, a surgery for the removal of the frame is scheduled following a two day rest.
